Nafs at Peace
Astigmatic Records · 2021
In 2016, the Lahore quartet Jaubi marked the tenth anniversary of J Dilla's death with a cover of his song Time: The Donut of the Heart. The musicians viewed the song's rhythm as talam — a percussive framework of a raga, around which improvisation is built. This cover is a wonderful introduction to the group's musical philosophy, combining improvisation of North Indian classical music and jazz with sampling. The musicians reveal their approach in the debut album Nafs at Peace. "Nafs" is an Arabic word meaning "self," "ego," or "soul." The album was recorded with the participation of Tenderlonious, a London jazz musician and head of the label 22a, and Latarnik, a Polish pianist and member of the bands EABS and Błoto. Earlier, in 2020, the musicians in the same lineup recorded an album of improvised ragas Ragas from Lahore.
