Mamman Sani
La Musique Electronique du Niger
Sahel Sounds · 2013
In the 70s of the XX century, Niger was ruled by the military dictator Seyni Kountché. However, it was during this time that Mamman Sani Abdullaye, one of the classics of electronic music in West Africa, was working in Niger. Perhaps everyone who lived in Niger at that time heard his works, although they did not know the author's name and did not even think about their origin. The fact is that Mamman Sani Abdullaye wrote music for television and radio broadcasts. The Nigerian folklore served as the source material for his compositions. Mamman's only album was recorded in 1978 at the National Radio studio. In agreement with the Minister of Culture, the album was released in a limited series of cassettes showcasing contemporary music from Niger. In 2013, the album was reissued by the Portland label Sahel Sounds.
