El Grupo Renacimiento is a make-believe legendary Colombian salsa band that became popular in the 70's. In reality, it was created by a modern-day Colombian band called Meridian Brothers, — which, in turn, is an alter ego of a Bogotá native, Eblis Alvarez. For over two decades, Alvarez has remained an extremely prolific musician, experimenting with avant-garde and Latin American genres and mixing them with psychedelic rock and electronic music.
Each composition of El Grupo Renacimiento pays tribute to one of the many sub-genres of salsa. For example, Triste Son is dedicated to the son style, which originated in Cuba and gave rise to various types of Afro-Cuban dance music. In the beginning of the 1930s, son made its way to New York City, where it got mixed with other styles of Latin American music, eventually leading to the emergence of modern salsa.
El Grupo Renacimiento was released on Ansonia label, which was silent for 30 years prior. Since the late '40s, the New York-based label has released numerous records aimed at the Puerto Rican, Dominican and Cuban local diasporas, as well as at listeners from South America and the West Indies.
