Azerbaijani Gitara
Bongo Joe · 2020
Rustem Guliyev was born in 1969 in the village of Kosalar, Nagorno-Karabakh. In his childhood, he mastered the tar and saz, and first encountered the guitar during his military service, quickly becoming a renowned guitarist. In the early 90s, he left his home due to the conflict in Karabakh and settled in the capital of Azerbaijan. There, he played at weddings and on television, recording numerous cassettes. Rustem's style incorporated music from Azerbaijan, flamenco, Bollywood melodies, Afghanistan, and Iran. He created a unique sound within the already distinctive Azerbaijani "electro-guitar" music. Unfortunately, his career was cut short in 2005 after battling lung cancer. However, his music continues to remain popular throughout the country. Azerbaijani Gitara is a compilation of Rustem's recordings made from 1998 to 2004. It is compiled by the Swiss label Bongo Joe, Rustem's family, and the Georgian label Mountains of Tongues.
