Memory of a Cut Off Head
Castle Face Records · 2017
Before we leave Europe, I really want to remember the recent album "Memory of a Cut Off Head" by John Dwyer and company. Dwyer is famous for his love of fairy-tale and mythological characters of European culture. The covers of his band Oh Sees alone are worth it, songs about kings and queens, fortresses and the creatures guarding them. This feature is particularly vividly revealed on this album. The acoustic arrangements with violins and harpsichords are reminiscent of the Baroque era - a time when the culture of collecting fairy folklore was formed, supported by many authors, including Giambattista Basile, Charles Perrault, the Brothers Grimm, and many others. The heroes of the songs are also absolutely fairy-tale: a king and queen who tore out their hearts to hide their love; a wise creature dwelling in the depths of the garden, who will teach the wisdom of life to whoever reaches the end of the path leading to it.
