We No Be Machine
Strut · 2020
The new project from the group K.O.G & The Zongo Brigade and Tom Excell, a member of the soul-afrobeat collective Nubiyan Twist. We No Be Machine is the debut album of the project, an afrofuturistic fantasy about the music of Ghana. American thinker Mark Dery coined the term “afrofuturism” in his essay Black to the Future in 1993. Dery pointed out that the idea of the future prevalent in contemporary culture is almost exclusively white. This is especially evident in science fiction. According to Dery, as African Americans began to emerge as authors of science fiction towards the end of the 20th century, a new vision of the future based on a completely different cultural experience emerged. Similarly, in the new release Onipa, there is a reflection on how the music of Ghana could sound in an alternative future.
