Voz di Sanicolau
Fundo de Maré Palinha
Analog Africa · 2020
In 1976, seven musicians from Cabo Verde, known as Voz di Sanicolau, gathered in a small recording studio in Rotterdam to record an album koladeyry, inspired by the music of their native island of San Nicolau. The need to make ends meet forced the musicians to return to their daily work, and Voz di Sanicolau disappeared as quickly as they appeared, leaving the album "Fundo de Marê Palinha" as the only evidence of their existence. Forty-four years later, the album sounds as fresh as the day it was recorded.
Most likely, Dutch sound engineer Frans Rollan, who led this recording, did not even imagine that he would become part of history. And yet, Joana do Rosario's voice on this record became the first female vocal from Cabo Verde to be captured on a music album.
