Zava Matotra
Self-released · 2019
The Moscow collective, which was formed in 2013 against the backdrop of interest in African music. The name Zava Matotra translates from Malagasy as "serious business." The group's creativity began with covers of African pop music from the 70s: the Black Santiago orchestra from Ghana, Mahmoud Ahmed from Ethiopia, Moussa Doumbia from Mali, and others. Almost immediately after the group was created, a singer from Madagascar joined, followed by a singer from Congo, and later from Nigeria. The group members carefully studied and reconstructed the sound of Congolese, Nigerian, Malagasy, Ethiopian, and other African music. Subsequently, the musicians began composing their own melodies, and in 2019 they recorded an album of original music. The result was a fusion of styles such as rumba, afrobeat, reggae, funk, indie, and soukous.
