Meridian Brothers & Conjunto Media Luna
Paz En La Tierra
Bongo Joe · 2021
After working on the music for a documentary film about Colombian singer Diomedes Diaz, Ivan Medellin from Conjunto Media Luna and Eblis Alvarez from Meridian Brothers decided to explore the role of the accordion in Colombian folk music. Despite the theatricality of the performance and changes in traditional musical structures and harmonies, the resulting album is largely based on vallenato, a popular folk style from the Caribbean coast of Colombia. The musicians themselves say that for the past 20 years they have either been mixing tradition with pop or working with rhythms and melodies approved by "international legislators of good taste." Realizing that they are bound hand and foot by the "chains of colonial unconsciousness," the musicians attempted to defend their musical heritage, far from global trends. The result of this struggle is Paz En La Tierra.
