Les Bonpos
Tibet: Traditions rituelles des Bonpos
Ocora · 1993
Bon — ancient religion of Tibet, absorbed by Buddhism, which came from India in the 8th century. It was the Bon traditions that gave Tibetan Buddhism most of its distinctive features. The Bon religion suffered from the Chinese occupation in 1959 no less than Buddhism. Hundreds of followers resettled from eastern Tibet to the Himalayas, where they preserved their traditions in the Menri Monastery, where music, dance, and ritual songs played an important role. These were recorded by Ricardo Canzio in March 1981 and April 1983. The liturgical chanting is illustrated by the "Song dedicated to the deity-protector Midu" and the "Nag-zhig propitiation ceremony". Other ceremonial practices are presented by the "Offering songs for a tea party" and the "Drums praising Shenrab", the only fully instrumental piece on the album.
