Etran de L’Air, or "stars of the Aïr region" - a family group consisting of brothers and cousins who have made a name for themselves at wedding parties over the past 25 years. The family of brothers comes from the nomadic Tuareg tribes who settled in Agadez in the 1970s, fleeing from drought. The brothers were born and raised in the Abalane area, in the shadow of the Great Mosque of Agadez. In 1995, their relatives started playing music when the current leader of the group, Moussa "Abindi" Ibra, was only 9 years old. "We had only one acoustic guitar," he says, "and instead of drums, we used a calabash, which we hit with a sandal." Etran de L'Air play in a Pan-African style, drawing inspiration from Malian blues, the bar bands of the Hausa people, and Congolese soukous. Perhaps it is this quality that makes them so beloved in their native Agadez, where many different ethnicities reside.
