Fu Chronicles
Daptone Records · 2020
Antibalas, an American afrobeat group from Brooklyn, is celebrating its 20th anniversary by returning to its Williamsburg roots. In an interview with NPR Morning Edition, the band's vocalist Amayo said: "Since childhood, I studied martial arts, and kung fu was central to everything I did. When I started making music, I couldn't imagine music without kung fu and wanted to bring it all together. Fu Chronicles - the first chapter where kung fu meets afrobeat." Antibalas, which means "bulletproof" in Spanish, came to light thanks to the creativity of the group Africa '70 of Nigerian musician Fela Kuti and Eddie Palmieri's project Harlem River Drive Orchestra. Although their music typically follows the musical architecture and language of afrobeat, it incorporates elements of jazz, funk, dub, and traditional drumming from Cuba and West Africa.
