Sinikka Langeland
Maria Magdalena
Lawo Classics · 2021
Collection of Norwegian folk religious songs about Mary Magdalene, found in Solør, Telemark, and Gudbrandsdalen. The recording was made at Nidaros Cathedral and represents a continuation of a long-term project in which the authors juxtapose folk songs with Bach's organ chorales, based on the same hymns. On this release, Langeland employs a more liberal approach, yet still combines folk songs with Bach's works, as in her earlier recording of songs about the Virgin Mary. According to the description of the work on the official website of the label Challenge Records, songs about Mary Magdalene, "who bore children from her father, brother, and priest, but purified herself from sin after years of repentance in the desert," served as a source of comfort for many women in the Middle Ages.
