Taboo: Songs of Love & Death
Ored Recordings · 2021
The new album by the group Jrpjej includes songs from archival recordings of the past century and folklore expeditions of the label. Some of them are performed close to the original, while others are radically changed. Thanks to the new vocalist, Dayana Kulova, the group's repertoire now includes not only epic and heroic works, but also women's songs: humorous, lamenting, and mournful. The title song became "tebu," a lament of a girl over whom a group of horsemen mocked, with the instigator being a guy who was raised with her in the same family. The Adyghe "tebu" can be translated as "request" or an exclamation "oh my God." In other songs, girls go beyond the unloved to prevent bloodshed, ricochet shots kill at beauty contests, storytellers curse kings, and heroes of the war for independence die from wounds received in battle for love.
