Nora Brown
Long Time To Be Gone
Jalopy Records · 2022
Nora Brown specializes in traditional music of the Southern Appalachians and is a master of the banjo and guitar. In her childhood, she learned to play the banjo from the American folk-revival star John Cohen, as well as from other well-known folk performers such as George Gibson, Lee Sexton, and Art Rosenbaum. Long Time To Be Gone is Nora's third album, recorded in St. Ann's Church in Brooklyn Heights, built in the late 19th century.
Aside from the magnificent acoustics of St. Ann's Church, Long Time To Be Gone is notable for its unique set of instruments, each of which is connected to Brown's musical lineage. Among Nora's instruments are the 1888 Luscomb banjo that belonged to her great-great-grandfather; a fretless banjo made by her father; and a five-string banjo on which Roscoe Holcomb once recorded his album High Lonesome Sound. Roscoe Holcomb corresponded with Nora's teacher, John Cohen, and even Bob Dylan was once inspired by his music. Now his five-string banjo is housed in the Library of Congress, but it ended up in Nora's hands during the recording session.
