Mohammad Reza Shajarian
Khazaan
Caltex Records · 1992
Little-known collection of compositions performed by Iranian singer Mohammad Reza Shajarian. Shajarian is considered one of the most renowned performers of Iranian traditional music. His repertoire included songs from many peoples living in the territory of modern Iran, including Lurs, Kurds, Mazanderanians, and Azerbaijanis. In 1999, UNESCO in France awarded him the Picasso Award, and in 2006, the UNESCO Mozart Medal. In 2017, the newspaper Los Angeles Times called him "the greatest living maestro of Persian classical music".
Album Khazaan was recorded with the participation of a large Persian orchestra. On it, you can hear how the European string section combines with traditional Persian musical instruments: tar, santur, barbat, and others. Moreover, the emphasis is not on European instruments, so everything sounds in the best traditions of Arab singers Umm Kulthum and Fairuz, only in an Iranian manner.
