During her studies at the University of Illinois in the 1950s, Yantina Nurman met a girl from South Africa who was recording South African songs for the Folkways label. She advised Yantina to send the label a cassette with Dutch songs that she knew from childhood. Nurman followed the advice and composed guitar accompaniments to the songs, after which she wrote a letter to the label. Several weeks later, the songs were officially released on Folkways Records.
