Innov Gnawa — group of Moroccan immigrants from New York. The collective is led by Maalem Jaffar, a performer on guembri, a three-stringed lute. Jaffar is accompanied by a choir of four musicians, maintaining rhythm with krakebs, metal castanets common in the Maghreb. Gnawa music, also known as "Sufi blues," is a spiritual tradition rooted in Maghreb history. In Morocco, it was brought by West African slaves. Because of this, jazz musicians often take an interest in gnawa, finding common roots with their own music. When Bosco Mann, a New York producer, saw the hypnotic performance of Innov Gnawa, he invited them to record a few tracks. In a five-hour session, the group prepared material for an entire album. All in one take. "Lila," meaning "night," is a traditional ceremony in which Maalem and his ensemble perform a healing ritual through music.
