Shabaka
African Culture
Impulse! Records · 2022
The first solo album of one of the key contemporary jazz saxophonists, Shabaka Hutchings. Here Shabaka demonstrates the art of mastering various wind instruments, creating abstract sound canvases from their sounds devoid of any structure. There is almost no rhythm section on the recording, but you can hear a Japanese bamboo flute shakuhachi (seemingly African Culture); kora, a West African harp, and a type of thumb piano, mbira. Unlike Shabaka's other works, charged with political protest and tireless, sometimes even aggressive improvisation, the musician's solo work turned out to be very meditative, resembling tribal ambient.
