Jean Ségurel
Autour des Monédières
Odeon · 1959
For the folk music of Occitania, the homeland of troubadours, located in the south of France and in a small part of Spain and Italy, ballads are characteristic. In the ballads from this album, one can hear an interweaving of motifs from these countries, but due to the performance of Jean Ségurel, they take on a shade of French chanson. Jean-Baptiste Ségurel was a French accordionist, composer, and conductor, born on October 13, 1908, in the French commune of Chomé. Ségurel started out as a violinist, but after picking up the accordion upon returning from military service, he realized he wanted to dedicate his life to this instrument. A significant period of Ségurel's career was spent as a minstrel of his time: performing at various fairs and weddings. Jean-Baptiste's friends introduced him to the founder of the "Le Soleil" label, through which he established himself as a professional musician. In 1968, General de Gaulle awarded him the title of Knight of the Legion of Honor.
