Altin Gün
Yol
ATO Records · 2021
The new album by Altin Gün, where Anatolian rock and funk are seasoned with synth-pop sound. Being locked down due to the epidemic, the musicians delved into studying drum machines and electronics, adding a disco style from the early 80s to their sound. These experiments turned out to be in tune with modern pop music. For example, the gloomy synthesizer lines of Ordunun Dereleri strongly resemble a recent attempt by The Weeknd to update the sound of the same 80s. Like on their previous albums, Altin Gün extensively use folkloric material. Yekte is a traditional song from the city of Kayseri, and the song Arda Boylar originates from the Balkan Peninsula, which was once part of the Ottoman Empire. The use of these ancient melodies creates an intriguing sense of timelessness. The album is somewhere between the 19th-century Ottoman Empire, 60s Haight-Ashbury, 80s New York, and our days.
