The family of Ustaad Naseeruddin Saami stood at the origins of the kavvali school founded in the 13th century in Delhi. His ancestor Miyan Samat studied under the legendary Amir Khusrau, a cult Sufi poet, after which the tradition was passed down from father to son for over 7 centuries. Saami himself began his creative journey in the mid-50s under the guidance of his uncle Ustaad Munshi Raziuddin. For many years of training, he was only allowed to express his thoughts through singing. Saami's style is called "Sudh Bani" and apparently he is the last of the living vocalists practicing the microtonal system of shruti with 49 notes. East Pakistan Sky - his third album, produced by Ian Brennan, known for his work with Tinariwen. The recording took place in Karachi during a live set on the master's rooftop with musical accompaniment by his four sons.
