Don Cherry
Om Shanti Om
Black Sweat Records · 2020
Om Shanti Om was recorded by the Italian company RAI in 1976, but was only released this year by the Black Sweat Records label. In the improvised compositions on this album, all the knowledge of the pioneer of world-fusion, Don Cherry, acquired during his numerous travels around the world, is combined. In addition to Cherry himself, playing the flute, trumpet, and kora, the recording features Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos, Italian guitarist Gian Piero Pramaggiore, and Don's wife, Monica, performing drone on the tanpura. Indian mantras coexist with African singing and Latin rhythms. The recording turned out to be very eclectic, but in this case, it only works in its favor.
