Atrium Musicae De Madrid
Musique De La Grèce Antique
Harmonia Mundi France · 1979
While evidence of the greatness of ancient Greek architecture and literature is familiar to everyone, miraculously survived only a few scattered fragments of papyrus with ancient Greek music. Atrium Musicae De Madrid collected and performed all available recordings for the first time. This album is part "archaeological", part imaginary panorama of the music of Ancient Greece. Many sources list Roberto Gerhard, a 20th-century Spanish composer, as a co-author of the work. Most likely, he did serious work on scores for musicians. I suggest the entire album may be his fantasy, inspired by ancient scriptures. It's hard to believe that ancient Greek music sounded like this. At the same time, Gerhard's works were based on Catalan song traditions, synthesized with the musical language of the New Viennese school, which is generally heard on this album.
